Welcome!
Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast is phasing in a new community based volunteer support system. They hope to have this new model fully in place by the fall of 2013. What does that mean? This will be a transition year - time to understand and embrace the new changes, to implement them slowly as we have volunteers interested in taking on these new roles.
Coastal Connection (previously referred to as Community #2) currently includes the entire city of Virginia Beach and Knotts Island, NC. We are the only community (out of 4) that is comprised of primarily only one city. Virginia Beach has the largest concentration of members out of any other council area. In order to keep the communities as balanced as possible in population, Virginia Beach was not combined with another major area. Why this new system? Under the previous system, all volunteer support came directly from service units - smaller, more localized areas. Each service unit had anywhere from 10-30 volunteer positions. Unfortunately, in smaller units, it was extremely difficult to find enough volunteers to staff each position. Under the community model, these areas will rely more on the community volunteers, which will be staffed from multiple areas. But what about larger areas like ours? Communities will still provide us benefits too! Unlike smaller areas, the majority of the work will still have to take place in service units. This is due to the fact that one community volunteer cannot possibly provide adequate support to thousands of scouts and volunteers. Service units in the larger areas will still have robust volunteer staffs and will still have additional positions in addition to what is listed in the community plan. However, the community level will still have the basic outlined positions who will serve much more as liaisons between council and the service units and provide consistency and faster response time to volunteer needs. The community volunteers will also take on a more significant role in supporting girls and adults in pathways other than a troop pathway. Service units will continue to be the primary support source for troops. |
